VICTORIA ISLAND WEATHER REPORT

Asparagus & The Weather

Asparagus generally begins to sprout in February and is harvested continually (each field is harvested every 1-3 days) through the middle of May. Weather conditions greatly affect the rate of growth, quality and taste. At the beginning of our season the spears grow more slowly and have a stronger flavor. Conversely, when it is warm and spears are growing up to ten inches per day, you will taste a milder flavor. Ever see a slightly crooked spear? Probably means it was growing in windy conditions. If only the tip is bent, it may have rained just before harvest, forming a crust on the soil. The spear pushed hard to break through, bending at the tip. This is an aesthetic problem only and does not affect overall quality. Avoid spears with tips that are not tight and compact. This can mean the asparagus is old, not properly cooled after harvest, or was not stored under proper conditions.

Blueberries & The Weather

Blueberries begin to ripen in May and are harvested until early July. Each field is harvested 3-5 times depending on ripening characteristics of the variety. Most varieties require a certain range of chilling hours (temperatures below 40 degrees) for optimal production.

Average Tempertures/ Rainfall:

March high 67°, low 43° / 2.66 inches

April high 74°, low 45° / 1.17 inches

May high 81°, low 50° / 0.53 inches

June high 88°, low 55° / 0.10 inches
