In selecting blueberries, look for berries that are completely blue, with no tinge of red. Sometimes you'll see a cottony white or silver coating on the berries—this is actually good. It is the "bloom" and it helps to protect the blueberries' freshness.

Fresh blueberries will last up to two weeks in the refrigerator. Just be sure to store them in a rigid, shallow container covered with a clear wrap. Never store them in a tall, upright container or those berries on the bottom may be crushed, causing them to leak juice and quickly rot.

Fresh blueberries can also be safely and easily frozen to be enjoyed at any time of the year. The best way to freeze fresh blueberries is by placing them in the freezer on a rimmed baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Once they are frozen, transfer the blueberries to airtight containers and return them to the freezer until you’re ready to use them. Remember, do not wash the blueberries prior to freezing, wash them right before use.
